- 1932 Born in Gah, Punjab, British India.
- 1954 Finished his bachelor's and master's degrees in Economics from Panjab University, Horshiarpur.
- 1957 Completed his Economics Tripos at St. John's College, University of Cambridge. Returned to India to serve as the senior lecturer of Economics at Panjab University.
- 1960 Went to the University of Oxford for his D.Phil at Nuffield College.
- 1962 Finished his doctoral thesis under the supervision of I.M.D. Little, titled "india's export perfomance, 1951-1960, export prospects and policy implications". Also served as a reader in economics at Panjab University during this time.
- 1963 Returned as an economics professor at Panjab University till 1965.
- 1966 Worked for the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development for 3 years. Later, he was appointed as an advisor to the Ministry of Foreign Trade by Lalit Narayan Mishra, in recognition of his talent.
- 1969 Was a professor of internation trade at the Delhi School of Economics, DU till 1971.
